The half-dollar coin, known as the Capped Bust, is very valuable today. The one from 1818 has the word LIBERTY written on the headband of a long-haired woman. There are many things that would determine its value, the most important being the condition of a coin and how well preserved it is. It is not enough to state that it looks in good condition because there are 70 levels to determine the condition, including G (Good), F (Fine) and XF (Extremely Fine). If it has been cleaned then that destroys any numismatic value, but silver value still holds, and you can obtain daily prices of silver from any source.

Professional valuation can also be sought, as at Jake’s Marketplace (www.jakesmp.net/) or any number of numismatics manuals such as the Black Book or the Red Book Guide to US Coin Values. One can value the coin in the following grading standards according to how clear the word is; for instance, ‘very good’ valuation means that at least three letters of LIBERTY are clear, and ‘extremely fine’ has the word in its entirety, sharp and strong, with the woman’s hair shown up on the coin still. Those which were in circulation are as follows: G4 is $65; VF30 is $130; EF40 is $225; AU55 is $950. Those which were kept out of circulation - the MS60, MS63, MS64 and MS65 - can fetch four or five figure sums, with the rarest at $16,000 provided with no traces of wear.
