No one knows the exact year. Most likely, skateboarding was born sometime in the late 1940s or early 1950s when surfers in California, wanted something to surf when the waves were flat. No one knows who made the first board. It appears that several people came up with similar ideas at around the same time.

Though the exact date of invention of skate boards is not known it is speculated that it was in 1940's or 1950's. Skateboard is a contracted platform used for skateboarding. The initial skateboard was developed by removing the bottom part of a skate and attaching them to flat wooden planks, this is how a skate board was invented.

The skateboard has developed a lot over the period of years and many skate boards were produced during the 60's. The models developed earlier were usually designed like surf boards, with no concavity and were built out of solid wood or plastic. The wheels were developed from "clay" composite or steel. The axels of the initial skate board were very less sturdy and had a 'single action' design in contrast to now a days "double action".

Thomas Welsh filed the first patent in 1958, but he didn't invent the skateboard.  No one knows WHO invented the skateboard but in 1957 a surfer in the beach city of Coronado California named John Pickens added a piece of quarter round to the rear edge of his steel wheel board.  This gave the rider more control and we were able to jump curbs, do wheelies, 360's and more.
A sport was born and open to all modifiers and comers.
