The mechanics for playing the game sci dama are similar to that of the original game named dama. However, the difference between the original and sci dama is that sci dama has been specifically tailored to accommodate mathematical equations and therefore promote education.

The original game is essentially the same as a draughts or checkers as it is known in other parts of the world. Two players face off against each other with 12 pieces each. It is played on a checkered board and the pieces can only move diagonally. Each player takes it in turns to move one of their pieces diagonally and attempt to capture all of the opponent's pieces.

  • How to capture a rival's counters

Capturing an opponent's piece involves 'jumping' them diagonally and requires an empty space behind the opposing piece in order for it to be a legal capture. However, this is where the rules have been altered to create sci dama.

In order for a player to capture an opponent's piece, they must be able to complete the mathematical or scientific equation that is attached to the particular square that they will land on after capturing. Sci dama uses a specifically designed board that is outlined with numbers and the squares each contain a mathematical equation.

  • Basic numeracy skills are required to have the edge

This adds another level to the basic game of dama and requires the players to use mental math in order to win. The difficulty can also be customized so that the game is available to players of all mathematical ability.
