Stamps, or to be more specific, the values of stamps are like the values of most other collectibles. In other words, they fluctuate, depending on what is sought after by collectors, how many of a particular item are available, how old the particular item of interest is and what condition it is in. After all, even an unused stamp can be subject to damage or fading if not stored safely.

  • The Stamp
The $0.01 Andrew Jackson stamp was brought into circulation in 1962/3. It is emerald green and pictures the head of Andrew Jackson, who served from 1829 to 1837 as the seventh US President, facing to the right. This stamp was apparently designed by William K. Schrange, who modeled Jackson's image for the stamp on a medal created by Moritz Fuerst, an American artist and medalist, or medal engraver, in 1829.

Although he had already appeared on two $0.02 confederate stamps, Jackson was not honored with a stamp by the US Post Office until 1863, when a $0.02 stamp was issued. Other stamps bearing Jackson's image were issued in 1873 ($0.02), 1883 ($0.04), 1894 ($0.03), 1903 ($0.03), 1938 ($0.07) and 1967 (($0.10). In addition, he appeared on three commemorative issues. These were the 1937 $0.02 Army Issue, the 1946 $0.03 Tennessee Statehood Issue and the 1961 $0.05 Battle of New Orleans Issue.

  • The Value
Unfortunately, this particular stamp was produced in great quantities. Consequently, the value is rather low at $0.18 to $0.35 in mint condition. As a rule, these stamps are sold as part of a collection, either by quantity or by weight. It is said that there were some minor variations in the perforation of these stamps, which may make a difference.
