Do you think commercialisation enhances sport or destroys its distinctiveness and original purpose?

The original purpose of most sports is to have fun and/or compete with others.  Commercialism doesn't mean people can't still do both.  What it does do, is increase the level of safety in the sport through mass-production of safety-gear relating to the sport.

It does drive out small businesses as well. I look at what they have done to soccer, players were once dedicated, now they seem more concerned with modelling for underwear, or aftershave, the actual players become commercialised and are on extortionate amounts of money. Thank you for you answer Walt O'Reagun, it appears a tough balancing act when things become commercialised.
