What is the origin of the curious English expression "To cock a snook at.."? --What is its meaning; and does it have any connection at all with the game of snooker?

It hasn't any connection with snooker, as it originates from the late 18th C and is the same as "thumbing your nose at someone".The gesture was said to resemble a cockerel's comb, while a snook was supposedly any insulting gesture using the hand.It was basically an olden version of  the V-sign.
