Most common sewing machines pull material by means of the "feed dog" located on the bed directly underneath the presser foot.  "Feed dog teeth" are the sharpish protrusions that point upwards from the moving feed dog so that it can grab the material and feed it under the needle.

The dog teeth are used to grip the material as you sew and feed the material through the machine
