There are two rankings of player in the snooker. One is the amateur and the other ranking is professional. To come in the professional player rankings and be a professional player, you have to go through a lengthy procedure. There are tournaments organized by WPBSA (World Professional Billiard and Snooker Organization) throughout the year. To become a professional player, 1st you are required to qualify for those tournaments. If you have qualified for a particular tournament, your performance is monitored by WPBSA.
If you are not in the ranking then you may have to play a qualifying round before each tournament. Whole performance of the year is monitored by WPBSA. The ranking is released at the end of the year according to which the merit is determined for a tournament. For example only 16 top players of the world play in World Snooker Championship held at crucible. Similarly there are other tournaments. Mostly WPBSA entertains the player up to the ranking of 256. If you improve your ranking in WPBSA rankings by performing well in the tournaments and reach a ranking of 256 then you are considered as a professional player. At professional level, the players are also sponsored by companies and have a very handsome income.
