Hummel plaques usually feature a figurine in the style of Hummel figurines as part of the plaque. These Hummel figurines were unique in the sense that they could be described as universally cute. They resemble more or less characters of children and their pets you can see in old illustrations of German fairy tales. The Hummel figures were basically ceramic figures that were based on the unique artistic style of Maria Innocentia Hummel a German nun. The figures are made of porcelain. Colours based on turpentine and oil is used on the figures that are bisque fired and glazed finished. The plaque could itself made to resemble a crumbling wall segment next to which a figurine was standing or sitting. The Hummel plaques are manufactured by the Goebel Company.
