Actually ... the wizard has the potential to become the most powerful, due to their studies.

A sorcerer starts as more powerful, due to their innate ability - but they lack the discipline and control that a wizard has. Thus, a wizard is able to master more powerful spells over time.

But if you want a truly powerful arcane user ... you would go with a Warlock. Due to their deal with infernal forces, they get the best of both sorcerer and wizard.

It depends on the game ... But in D&D, it mostly has to do with what spells they can cast and whether it is an ability they are born with or something they have to learn ... And use a spellbook or memorize spells.

There is also a difference between classes that use arcane magic (such as those you list), and classes that use divine magic (such as clerics).
