Why does the thread keep coming out of the needle when I start to sew?

... Or at least twist the thread around itself. That works for me.

Though my mom doesn't do either. She just makes sure there is at least an inch of thread through the needle, doubled back on itself.

Tension is set too high on the sewing machine.

If you're sewing with a machine then Korvo is correct, the tension is to high on the machine. Back the tension down, a little at a time, until the thread stays put!
