I am in my 50's and have been invited to a formal party. I've never been to one before. What should I wear, and what accessories would be suitable ("black tie" party was mentioned)?

Well if black tie was mentioned, the men will be wearing tuxedos, so I would assume a nice dress/gown is appropriate. But as I've never been to one of these events either, it's just a guess!

Lucky you! An invite to a fancy party - a chance to get dressed up.

Because you say 'Black Tie" was  only 'mentioned'  that leads me to think that this party its not likely to be too formal  -  a long dress, or a cocktail type short dress or even separates, as long as they are dressy will all be correct.

If you've never been to one of these parties before you might consider hiring your dress. I know you can do this online now - but personally I'd always go to the shop and try things on.  The good thing about renting/hiring a dress is that -

  1. It convenient- you don't have to buy something you might never wear again!
  2. It's fairly cheap- you can get a very expensive dress for a fraction of the cost
  3. You get help to choose the dress and....
  4. You'll probably get the accessories there too!

I've hired formal gowns before and been very happy.

If you'd rather buy - take someone with you - someone who loves to shop, and she can go back and forward to the changing rooms with different choices.

Lots of stores do Personal Shoppers who offer a free, no obligation service - and this would be my first choice - its a great treat - you have a coffee and try on dresses to your hearts content!

It's FREE...

They will also bring out accessories for you to try - but take your own shoes.

Being over 50 you don't have to slavishly follow fashion trends - who wants to look like  a teenager anyway?  No - you'll look as fabulous as your daughter, just more stylish. Remember...

Do  buy well fitting clothes - baggy clothes might hide the lumps and bumps but they actually make you look older than you are because they are shapeless

Do choose colours that suit your skin tone

Dont wear things that show too much skin or cleavage (unless you have a very good body!)

Don't wear skirts that are too short!

Accesories can really MAKE you outfit - they can add colour if you are wearing that 'little black dress'.  Be careful they don't overtake the dress - they should compliment it.  Flashy is OK but it should be elegant, and a lovely wrap - maybe with beads- will set off any attire.
