The President on a nickel is Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). He was the third president of America and was in position from 1801 to 1809. His is one of the faces carved into Mount Rushmore (second from the left if you stand facing it).
He was the person who wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He promoted the separation of church and state and believed that both were best when not involved in the other's issues.
Some landmarks of his presidency are the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and the Lewis and Clark Expedition from 1804-1806.
