Humility and sportsmanship are two key factors when it comes to being a professional and respected sportsman or sportswoman. They go together as both qualities are evident in a good sportsperson; humility is present when wins and losses occur, and sportsmanship is present when a competitive sport is played: It relates to aspects such as obeying the game rules and treating members of the opposing team as you would members of your own team. To succeed in any area of sport, it is vital to have both humility and sportsmanship, or a poor reputation will be gained on the playing field. In addition, those without such values are likely to flout the rules and regulations and soon be banned.

  • Acting with humility in victory
Acting with humility is most important when it comes to deciding the outcome of a sporting event. If an individual is on the winning team, it is vital that whilst they will of course be celebrating, they commend the other team and shake hands with everyone. If a person scored the winning goal, or did something of the equivalent, they should accept any praise they receive with kindness but be sure not to hog the limelight or become pigheaded. Qualities such as these will turn other players against a person, no matter how good they are on the playing field, causing tension within a sports team.

  • Acting with humility in defeat
An individual must also act with humility when facing defeat. They must have it in them to accept the other team has succeeded in this instance, and offer congratulations. Claiming the deciding of the match was unfair, or refusing the show the other team respect, will ruin the atmosphere of the game. In addition, the individual's team will gain a bad reputation, as other teams see its players cannot accept a loss.
