Is it a myth that women have to diet and exercise differently than men to lose weight?

Maybe. Mrs Didge and I were well overweight and in 2012 spent about five months getting our weight down. We lost 40 kg (almost 90 lbs) between us. We ate the same portions of the same food and exercised about the same amount. Of that 40 kg I lose 23 kg and she lost 17 kg.

That might be because it's harder for a woman to lose weight, but is more likely because I was 20 kg heavier than she when we started.
