Hey Anon, this really depends on the program in question. The harsh truth is many in the martial arts community see the vulnerability of women as a quick business opportunity. Self defense, like any skill, takes time to develop. With that in mind, if the programs are advertising a 'quick' guide to ensure that you will pick up the necessary skills to protect yourself...RUN! Well, maybe not run but don't be conned into it.

On the plus side, there are many ways to find a place that will teach you to protect yourself. Try to find a place that teaches some form of combat sports that has a team of competitors. This is extremely crucial because it shows that the program/gym nurtures athletes to perform competently against a fully resisting opponent. In essence, they have been taught the skill set needed to thrive in a non-choreographed environment. Do not fall for the 'we don't have competitors because our art is too deadly' malarkey.

I joined a gym for a similar reason and ended up competing here or there too. Who knows? You might do the same.

Hope this helps,

Abdul

Yes and No.

There are two things needed to make a girl's self Defense Class effective and they are easy to figure out.

1.) The instructor MUST be a "Good Instructor" who is teach defense for practical application based on "real World Scenarios.  Do some research on the Instructor. Hopefully there are testimonials from students.

2.) As a Student, you must be truly invested in "Learning". The instructor can only show you the moves, but you need to give it 100% focus and follow up on your own time. "Repetition aids learning" especially when it comes to muscle memory. You want to have reactions just happen and not have to try and think through them.

At the very least, it doesn't hurt to have the exercise that goes with these. It can strengthen your strikes and teach you the importance of distance and timing . . . not to mention Self Confidence.

Yes, the self defense program for females
and young girls would provide a little safety to them. Due to a large number of
rape cases and other things there is no safe place for females that’s It is necessaryto teach these kind of tactics for girls at school level. It will
help and motivate all the girls.

I like one of the ancillary suggestions found in such courses:  "Mark your attacker for later identification."
