What People don't understand is that skateboarding is different than other sports. There are no rules, there are no couches to tell you what to do, every skateboarder puts their one style into their skating. Their are so many stereotypes about skateboarders that I probably couldnt even begin to go over all of them right now. But first of all, people think that skateboarding is just some mindless activity that a bunch of stupid punks do. That could be true for some of us but those are probably not the real skaters. I consider myself a hardcore skateboarder. I skateboard every single day of my life. It is one of my main joys in life. In fact, skateboarding, I could say, is my life. And the fact that a lot of people think that skateboarders are a bunch of pot smoking punks doesnt usually apply to the real hardcore skateboarders out there. I have not touched one ounce of pot, cocaine, alcohol, meth, or any other destructive supplement and neither have any of my close friends who skate. I don't even drink soda because it is really bad for you. I get really good grades at school, I am in honors, and I plan on taking a 4 year college after completing my senior year. Now does that sound like a mindless punk to you? And as for the question 'should skateboarding be banned?' I don't think it should. If you don't skateboard, you can never fully understand it. The feeling a person gets from landing a trick they had just been trying for 2 hours straight without rest, the feeling of success when your feet land back on the skateboard, the overall feeling of accomplishment. All of these contribute to just doing one trick. And people don't get that we can't just skate at a skatepark. I am a skateboarding filmer and editor and I make videos for my sponsor and when I go out filming with the rest of the team, we don't just want to film a whole skate video at a skatepark. A real full length video takes at least a year to film. I have never seen a skate video that was filmed all at a skatepark. In fact, pretty much every single video I have ever seen has not one ounce of skatepark footage in it at all. Skate-parks are to limiting and they don't transfer over to the creative styles and art forms that film makers try to portray in skate videos. We need to be able to have more to skate than just a skatepark. Now don't get me wrong, I think it is really stupid when the rare, loser, scum bag kids think its cool to skate in the street in front of cars and stuff. I don't understand what they are trying to prove. I always have and forever will be respectful to anyone who confronts me about skateboarding on private property and I try my absolute hardest to obey the law.
If skateboarding was banned my life would be over.
Just because there are the occasional punks that occupy the sidewalks and streets with nothing better to do than piss off the respectable citizens doesnt mean you should ruin it for all the real skateboarders out there by banning something that they love.
Thank you.

Why should skateboarding be banned? It's not fair to the people who love to skateboard. If we are trying to ban one sport, then we should have to ban all the rest. Other sports are just as serious or dangerous, so what is the difference between skateboarding and surfing, or skiing, or karate? Is it fair that one sport be banned that people love and not others? NO!!! But if skateboarders can't learn to respect private and public property, they have major issues. Everything should be treated with respect. You didn't buy it, so don't vandalize or break it! I think there should at least be more skate parks so that skateboarders have a place to go to without breaking or hurting other peoples' things. But they should also respect the skate park!

Skateboarding is an activity that gets kids out of the house. If they take away skateboarding, they will be taking away a great way to exercise. What will be next? Biking? Rollerblading? If they keep going on like this, all kids will be able to do is stay indoors and play their games. (and we know how much parents hate that.)

No. Skateboarding is a sport just as any other. People who play football, play in the park. People who play basketball play at a local court. So their should be a designated place for skateboarding rather than loitering in parking lots. Banning it is a drastic move and is unnecessary.

Why should it be banned? Sure it can be dangerous but theres a much greater chance of you dying on your way to the skatepark in a car accident then actually dying at the skatepark if you are thinking about banning skateboarding then you should consider banning cars too because A: A skateboard doesnt pollute the air B: If an old man gets run over by a car he most likely dies but if the man gets run over by a skateboard he will most likely live C: A skateboard doesnt require a license D: Wheel clamping a skateboard would be stupid E: There would be much more space at parking lots F: A skateboard is way cheaper G: A skateboard is better exercise H: A skateboard looks cooler...

It shouldn't be banned. Perhaps you can skate at your local skateboarding park or facility. Kids around my neighborhood are allowed to skate anywhere except business properties.

There are many reason's why skateboarding shouldn't be banned, but if they did take skateboarding away, they would be taking away a great form of transportation. They would also be opening up an opportunity for kids to start taking drugs more, because they'd be taking drugs instead of skateboarding!

Oh my God, yep lets take away one of the largest individual sports kids have today. Lets get them really bored and hooked on drugs. Lazy lothargic wasteoids. Mabey if people push hard enough we can break all of their ankles and put an end to this haneous, extremely difficult, graceful, sport. Football can't even compete. Skaters can play football but I don't think the inverse is true. I still skate when I can, I am 33 and played college football, so I am qualified to make these statements. By the way ESPN rated motorcross racing the most physically demanding sport in America and a superb way to spend quality time with your family. I raced for 5 years also and I never touched drugs or got into trouble. Can you say that about all your scholastic athaletes. I have heard this bs since '85. So let it go. If you have not noticed action sports have been booming the last 11 yrs. We are here to stay.

The only way to change it, is to create a law for skaeboarders to wear proper protection & to go to an area for skateboarders. The law should be enfored for people who skateboard on the roads. If caught, a fine should be issued. The ONLY spot to skateboard safely is a place DESIGNED for skateboarders. NOT on the roads.

An older gentleman from the UK was roller skating around a market. Many passed by with disgruntled demeanor, as the fellow had a grand ol' time reliving his youth.  He also was sited a ticket, and admonished by store keepers.  Someone even shouted, "Grow Up!", as the man skated about.  Without pause to his actions, he enjoyed himself, and could care less about outside opinion and rebuke.  My hats off to this elder, and may he continue.  More or less, I am of the view-; If you can skate without incident among pedestrians and in public...so be it. Also most often it is property management who will give you a hard time, while in fear of not having insurance for accidents.

Well I have just had another "debate" with grumpy parents who as far as I am concerned are way passed their use by date about skating on local roads.  I am a proud mother of a long boarder who spends most of his time with friends, outside trying to improve their skills.  The only safe place and safe I mean firstly away from people that do nothing but abuse them and also and more importantly safe because the road is not often used by cars is at Pump at the Blue Mountains.  Living at Sydney it is a far way but the boys are happy to train it up there and skate shops like Hopkins set these days up and give prizes for various reasons. My major whinge is that when I pick the boys up from a local street after skating could people stop coming up to me and telling me off for letting the boys skate in their roads.  The roads are not yours and they are allowed to be there.  Rules of the RTA is as long as it is a minor road with no lane lines then go ahead and call  the cops and take down my rego, my address and phone number I have nothing to hide and will support the boys.  The proper gear is worn and the boys always have a spotter to tell them of an incoming car and above everything they have been taught to respect people and property in our neighbourhood and not swear or pull signs at them and that can be very difficult after seeing and hearing for myself how badly "adults" talk to them.  Lets support our kids and try keep them safe and boys please speak nicely to older people and then you can carry your head up high and know that you are a gentlemen and someone your mum can be proud of.  And to my son Jaz I think you are amazing!!

Skateboarding should not be banned. It is a fun recreational sport and competitive sport. I like skateboarding and I do not think it should be taken away. That is like taking a book away from a nerd or telling a child they can no longer play with toys. It should be banned in highly populated areas or on property, which it already is. Then you still have the rest of the world to skateboard on. :)

Skateboarding should not be banned because kids need to have a way to use their x-is energy, I should know since I'm a kid. Someone said that we need propper protection, but everything needs that. Cars arnt exactly the safest thing on earth. If people are going to ban them, then they also have to ban rollerblades and bikes, a very popular way to travel. Eather way its not fair

I don't think it should be banned, it is like any other competitive sport. There should be a place however, where those individuals that enjoy skate-boarding can go and practice and perform their stunts. Just as we have places for football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc.

I see people playing baseball at beaches, middle of the street, playing hockey on lakes, basketball in backyards, football in the streets anywhere! So if I don't feel like skating in the skate park just like you don't want to walk to a basket ball court every time you just want to practice dribbling a basketball, then I shouldn't in all means have to. Its a free world! We should start acting like it.

This is an easy one, skateboarders can skate anywhere they want, but, if they get hurt skate boarding insurance should not cover it, if they get hit by a car, the accident is their fault and should accept the fines and be responsible for all fees to  repair the damage to the vehicles they get in the way of. If they injure a person by colliding into them in any way it should be considered assault, and if it is an old person attempted manslaughter. Unless, they are skating in a skate park, then none of this applies.

Why in the world skateboarding should be banned? Dangerous for sportsman? Yeah, the same for MOST sports. But skateboarding pads are made to protect people. Dangerous for people around? Nope. Well, accidents happen but so rarely that it doesn't count. I don't see your point. You should've described at least your position.

Skateboarding should be banned on city sidewalks and in public places that are used as thoroughfares. In the city of Alhambra, CA, they do not allow roller skates, bicycles or skateboards on the sidewalks. This avoids injury to the citizens that are walking the streets, shopping. No allowing skateboarders, etc, has actually been good and encouraging for the community. The people that use the sidewalks are the serious consumer. The skateboarder, etc.,, is usually just a kid hanging out, passing time. .. No money to contribute to the community or economy.

"Everything is permissible - but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible but not everything is constructive." Corinthians 1, verse 23. I am against skateboarding because I am disabled. I have difficulty walking and making sudden moves and must use a wheelchair when I go out or have to walk any distance more than 200 feet. I do not mind sharing the sidewalk with others, but it seems that I put people out when they need to share the sidewalk with me. We have a few skate parks in our rather large community, which many teens do use, but there are some folks who cannot reach these parks since they are few and far between. Many folks board on the public streets and in parking lots, usually without observing the "rules of the road" or using the proper protective gear. There are also folks who skate right out in front of cars, seemingly without looking, in some of our neighborhoods and there are also folks who set up jumps from neighbors' driveways. There are pros and cons to every debate. I think we must work together and make compromises in order to reach a happy medium. As long as people are aware of their surroundings, considerate of others, obey the rules of the road, wear the proper protective gear, and show respect when other folks are around, it would be much better for everyone involved. We do not want to take anyone's fun away; after all, we were kids once too! The best solution, in a perfect world, would be easily accessible skate parks in every community.
Thanks for allowing me to air my opinion.

Why can't there be a law for people who skateboard to wear the proper protection?  Since skateboards are wheels, there should be a law to enforce.
The same goes for bicyclists. Bikes are also wheels thus they should share the same rules of the road as cars. Stopping at stop signs, red lights & so forth.  I hear about a great deal of accidents with bikes & skateboards every year.
